Unique alternatives for using potatoes
We all have an acquaintance who consumes potatoes in an alternative way. Some dipped in the strawberry shake of the vaulted fast food restaurant. And there are those who take the deep-fried meat in their hands and scoop out the mashed potatoes so that they don't have to use a plate. Well, these are among the more subdued versions. There are even more surprising ways to use potatoes.
1. Potatoes in the diet
In the minds of many of us, potatoes are a forbidden food during a diet, as they contain a lot of carbohydrates and starches. At the same time, more and more bodybuilders claim that this is erroneous information, because if we prepare the potatoes correctly - i.e. do not fry them in a lot of oil, but boil them, steam them, or maybe fry them in a hot air oven without oil - then they can be a much better partner in losing weight , like rice.
This is good news! We are not condemned to the boring chicken breast + rice menu for the rest of our lives if we are on a diet.
Let's see what this means at the micronutrient level: 100 grams of potatoes have half as many calories as the same amount of rice. Potatoes contain more vitamin C, more fiber, and are also richer in magnesium, potassium and sodium than rice.
Potatoes also have a higher satiety index, which means they fill us up more, we'll be hungry later, and with that, he brought in the last right hook, with which he triumphed over rice.
2. Potatoes and pickles
If you happen to be making pickled cucumbers and find yourself without white bread or buns at home, don't panic if you find 1-2 potatoes in the pantry. (If we can't find it, we may panic, but by no means until then!)
To begin with, cut one of the potatoes into circles and place it at the bottom of the jar. Cucumbers and the usual spices can be added. Finally, we cover everything with the other potato rings, putting the cucumbers in a "potato bracket".
In addition to the end result being the same as the version made with bread, even the juice remains cleaner. What's more, if our gluten-sensitive family member or guest refuses when offered, we can dissuade him by saying: "This is gluten-free", since there is no bread in it.
3. Potato dessert
We all know the good old plum dumplings that our grandmothers use to choke down the goulash soup in us, and then stab us for "hardly eating".
Every country has its own potato dessert. The Japanese, for example, add sugar and rice flour to boiled and mashed potatoes, then fill the dumplings formed from this mass with cheese and flatten them in a pan. It's worth trying, it might easily become the family's favorite dessert!
4. Potato pálinka
We wouldn't be Hungarian if we didn't try to make pálinka (brandy) out of potatoes too!
Although the preparation of potato pálinka is quite fiddly, and in fact it cannot even be officially called pálinka, since it is a vegetable distillate, this hardly holds back the masters of homemade pálinka making. If you haven't tried this yet, it might be worth a try!
5. Potato scrub
Don't even accidentally throw away the skins of the potatoes! We can easily scrub the brandy kettle, the oven, the pan or even the sink with the wet potato peel, without the need for harmful chemicals.
What's more, potato peels can also be used to remove rust! There is no more natural way to clean!
Potatoes are much more than a side dish. It should not be locked in dark cellars and bags, feel free to use it for anything! For more interesting content, visit our Facebook page, and don't forget: in our online store you can find everything you might need when processing potatoes!
