Bad sleep

Turning, shortness of breath, frequent trips to the toilet, waking up a lot, numb limbs, sweating - to name just a few of the "sufferings" of a bad night's sleep. If these sound familiar to you, because you often sleep poorly, then you probably also know how much a lack of restful sleep leaves its mark on everyday life.

You are tired during the day, you don't feel like doing anything, you feel depressed if you didn't sleep well at night. That's why you're looking forward to getting into bed again - but you're not sure you'll be able to sleep peacefully the next night either.

 

Nutritional causes of poor sleep

There can be countless different reasons behind poor sleep. It is worth consulting with a specialist in order to find out what leads to restless nights.

It happens that a sedentary lifestyle, high stress, bad habits or certain diseases prevent a calm and restful sleep. And it often happens that you sleep badly because of eating and nutrition.

 

Improper diet

A balanced diet can basically determine the quality of your sleep. Balance means variety on the one hand, and regularity on the other. Just one missed main meal can very easily upset the balance. It is worth striving as much as possible to have a system in your days that also covers meals.

Eating too few vitamins and minerals can also cause poor sleep! Primarily, the consumption of vegetables and fruits can significantly contribute to better sleep, but other foods containing useful nutrients will also have a good effect on your nights. Dairy products, meat, fish and eggs also contribute to better sleep by stimulating the production of the hormone responsible for regulating sleep cycles (melatonin).

 

Fluctuating blood sugar

Fluctuations in blood sugar are also a common problem affecting the quality of sleep. For proper sleep, it is essential that the blood sugar level remains stable throughout the night.

That's why they don't recommend eating sweets, pasta or refined carbohydrates right before bed!

 

Reflux

During sleep, the body reacts more slowly to changes, including, for example, irritations affecting the respiratory tract. Thus, it cannot respond appropriately when the acidic stomach contents start to irritate the esophagus: first micro-awakenings take place, followed by a reflexive cough. All of these impair the quality of sleep.

Bad sleep can therefore be caused by reflux. It is therefore worth avoiding, among other things, snacking and eating before sleep, as well as the consumption of alcoholic, carbonated and caffeinated beverages.

 

Overweight

Research has shown that the quality of sleep is worse in overweight people.
Being overweight is an obstacle to restful sleep.

Extra pounds, for example, increase the risk of breathing problems at night (obstructive sleep apnea).
